House of Cards

July 10, 2017

I never thought a simple card game would have an impact on the way I think. This morning, when I woke up, I went to my kid's room and played cards for a half hour with one of my girls, Shira. Shira is a special, but tough girl. While some girls show their love by giving hugs, kisses, and telling us, Shira expresses her love through her actions. After our card game, Everyone went downstairs for water slides and cotton candy. To my surprise, Shira dragged me everywhere she went. She made sure we stuck together the entire time and made her voice heard when someone tried to cut in front of me in line. After the water slides, we went to lunch.  On our way to lunch, she asked me to sit next to her. Once we sat down, she poured me water and asked me if I needed anything.  After lunch we went upstairs and played cards for at least an hour. Not one word was exchanged between the two of us during that hour and I felt as though we were wasting our time but when it was time for me to leave, Shira gave me the biggest hug, a smile for the first time, and walked away. My kids have taught me many important lessons. One of them being to appreciate the small actions because the small actions in life make up the big ones.
